3. What are common strategic terms?

Leaders, managers, and employees create various activities to further their organization’s vision, mission, and goals. StrategyFrog defines the following items to simplify your planning and execution efforts:

  • Strategic Objective ( is a big-picture goal for the organization (the “what”); it describes what the organization will do to fulfill its mission (e.g., increase revenue by 10% in two years).
  • Strategic Initiative ( )  is the means through which an organization translates its goals and visions into practice, or the “how” (e.g., expand the client base in the Northeast).
  • An Objective (describes something that an individual would like to achieve in the future (the “what”), typically supporting a Strategic Initiative. It sets the direction of what activities to pursue (e.g., improving social media presence by 20%).
  • Key Result (is a measurable outcome required to achieve the Objective, the “how” (e.g., create 30 blog articles for the website by January). It contains a metric with a start and target value.
  • Task ( is a small item to be finished within a specific time, supporting a Key Result (e.g., hiring a writer for blog articles).

Note: StrategyFrog recommends the language above. These terms are the default settings configured in the system. Your Strategy Planners can customize this language to fit the terms more commonly used in your organization.
