How do I CUSTOMIZE or ADD to the BALANCED SCORECARD?

Introduction #

Once the Balanced Scorecard for your organization has been customized, the data can be entered, defining each perspective (i.e., Financial, Customer, Internal Process, or Learning and Growth). While each perspective focuses on a different subject matter, the data to enter is the same.  (See the image below as a representative example.)

  • Balanced Scorecard Priority. This identifies the Balanced Scorecard Perspective you are defining.
  • Strategic Objective Title. This is the field to name your Strategic Objective.
  • Start and Due Dates. These fields define when your Strategic Objective starts and should end.
  • Departments. This optional field allows you to add organizational departments responsible for this item’s completion.
  • Leader. This field allows you to identify who will lead the Strategic Objective.
  • Supporters. This field allows you to identify who will help accomplish the Strategic Objective.
  • Key Performance Indicators. A Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively an organization achieves critical business objectives. You can identify one or more KPIs for your Strategic Objective.
  • Add Another Balanced Scorecard Priority. You can have one or more additional priorities within a particular perspective (i.e., Financial, Customer, Internal Process, or Learning and Growth).

Input Balanced Scorecard Perspectives #

Describe each Strategic Objective precisely.  Best practices suggest starting with an active verb (e.g., increase, improve, define, decrease, etc.). Clarify your target dates, identify a leader, and consider how you will measure success.

  1. Enter the title of your Strategic Objective (e.g., Increase revenue by 10% or Improve customer experience).
  2. Enter Start and Due Dates.
  3. Define the Leader of the Strategic Objective.
  4. Define the Supporter(s) or individuals who will take an active role in achieving this item.
  5. Enter Departments (Optional). Departments are added by default based on where Leaders and Supporter(s) reside.
  6. Add a Key Performance Indicator (KPI).

    1. Define the KPI Name (e.g., Profit, Revenue, etc.)
    2. Select the Metric to measure progress. You can measure success by % Percent, # Unit, or $ Currency.
    3. Determine the Initial Value (your starting point), Current Value (your current value if you are providing an update), and Target Value (your desired value). (Over time, you can update the progress by adding a new Current Value.)
    4. Add a Note. Provide helpful information as a reference for updated information on your KPIs.
  1. Add another Balanced Scorecard Priority. Add another priority for this perspective.
